PORTALJABAR, GARUT REGENCY - In order to commemorate World Environment Day, the Branch Leadership Council (DPC) of the Disaster Solidarity Anticipation Volunteers (RENTAN) of Garut Regency held a Socialization activity on the Importance of Protecting Nature and Tree Planting in Sukagalih Hamlet, Giriawas Village, Cikajang District, Garut Regency, Tuesday (9/6/2026).
This activity is a form of concern for environmental preservation as well as an effort to support disaster mitigation through tree planting in areas that are considered to have an important role in maintaining ecosystem balance.
Budiman, Head of the Garut Regency RENTAN Branch, stated that the tree-planting initiative involved active participation from the local community. The various tree species selected were ensured to be suitable for the characteristics and natural conditions of the Cikajang area.
Regarding the location selection in Sukagalih Village, Budiman revealed that there is historical value related to the disaster that hit the area two decades ago.
"Incidentally, according to history, there was a flood in this area, if I'm not mistaken, according to local sources in 2002. So we directed them to this area," he said.
By midday, the volunteer team and local residents had successfully planted hundreds of tree seedlings. Budiman also expressed his appreciation and gratitude to all those who supported the activity, especially the Cimanuk River School (SSC).
"I hope that this planting will not just be limited to planting, but I really entrust it to the members of RENTAN in Giriawas Village, in Cikajang, to take care of it, not just for ourselves, but at least for future generations," he continued.
Through this activity, Budiman emphasized that the main essence of the movement is not simply planting trees, but rather sustainably caring for them. He urged all RENTAN members in Giriawas Village and Cikajang District to continue caring for the trees they have planted to ensure environmental sustainability for future generations.
At the end of his explanation, Budiman urged all elements of society to be wise in managing their land. He emphasized that people are not prohibited from planting any commodities, but that ecological safety must remain a priority to reduce the risk of landslides and flash floods.
"But please, don't let it happen that when we sleep at night, it rains and brings mud to every hour. Don't let that happen, so the term is that the soil is strong, the trees are able to grip the ground," he concluded.
Through this activity, the Garut Regency Vulnerable Areas (RENTAN) Branch hopes to increase public awareness of the importance of environmental protection, enabling sustainable conservation efforts and supporting future disaster prevention. (Garut Communications and Information Service/rka)
