PORTALJABAR, BANDUNG CITY - Learning the angklung musical instrument in elementary school is an attraction in itself. This is because traditional tools made from bamboo have a distinctive sound.

With its uniqueness, it has been recognized by UNESCO. To preserve this, elementary school students in the city of Bandung have a curriculum for playing angklung.

Angklung, which is a traditional musical instrument from West Java, has become the nation's cultural heritage.

One of the efforts to introduce Angklung to the next generation is by implementing extracurricular activities in schools. One of them is at the Priangan Istiqomah Elementary School in Bandung.

The school's efforts, which have been established since 1951, are to "ngamumule" arts and culture. Every school student must know and be able to play angklung. This extracurricular is held every Friday, they have a supervising teacher from Saung Angklung Udjo.

The implementation of angklung for elementary school students starts from grade 2 to grade 6. They are taught how to hold and play angklung. Because this musical instrument can be played by many people, compactness is the priority.

Principal of Priangan Istiqomah Elementary School, Entin Watyatin, explained that teaching Angklung to these children has become an obligation at his school. Every student is at least familiar with traditional musical instruments. However, there are groups of students who are trained more to take part in championships held at the elementary school level.

Various achievements have been achieved and angklung performances are mandatory at every event held by the school.

Apart from that, this angklung can also form the character of students and the unity between them.

One of Sello's 6th grade students said that at first he was not interested in the angklung musical instrument. But after seeing and trying it over time it is very enjoyable.

"We can play music by shaking the angklung, it's really fun," he said.

Learning and introducing arts and culture from an early age is the goal so that the younger generation knows more about it and can preserve it.

Plus, it is hoped that extracurricular activities like this can be implemented in all elementary schools in Bandung City. The plan is that the Bandung City Education Office will introduce more arts and culture to students in elementary schools. (Diskominfo Bandung City/Revo)
