PORTALJABAR, BANDUNG CITY - For some residents of Bandung City, the Cibeunying area may be familiar. However, do you know the origin of the name Cibeunying that we currently know?

Since 1921, the Cibeunying area has been included in the City of Bandung. Since then, the Cibeunying area has developed with all its superior potential, especially culinary and arts until now.

After the expansion, Cibeunying was divided into 2 sub-districts, Cibeunying Kidul and Cibeunying Kaler based on their adjacent locations in the south and north.

So, what is the origin of the name Cibeunying?

Quoting the book Toponymy of Bandung City, Cibeunying comes from two words, namely "Ci" and "Beunying". Ci comes from the word Cai in Sundanese, which means Water.

In the city of Bandung, there are many areas that start with the word Ci/Cai because there are many rivers and tributaries that were the center of life in the flower city in ancient times.

Meanwhile, the word Beunying is taken from the name of a local plant (Ficus fistulosa Reinw. ex Blume) which is a type of plant from the Moraceae family or the banyan family. Still a relative of jackfruit, mulberry, bodhi tree, munding rubber, and hampelas.

Beunying is a tree with a height that can reach 10 meters. The leaves are thick and oval to oblong to lanceolate.

The upper surface is shiny with long stems. The flower arrangement is pot-shaped, growing from the leaf axils or in clusters on the stem.

Beunying lives in cool places and near water sources with elevations up to 2,000 meters. In open forests, damp forest edges are widely overgrown by this type. But unfortunately, currently it is very rare to find Beunying trees in Bandung City.

That is the origin of the name Cibeunying in Bandung City, which is still rarely known.
