PORTALJABAR, BANDUNG CITY - Acting Governor of West Java Bey Machmudin inspected the location of the flash flood that hit a densely populated residential area in the Braga area, Bandung City, Friday ( 12/1/2024 ).
It is known that flash floods due to the collapse of the Cikapundung River embankment in Bandung City occurred Thursday ( 11/1/2024 ) afternoon.
This flash flood also had quite a severe impact. Based on data from the Bandung City Fire and Disaster Management Service (Diskar PB), the flood caused around 600 houses in four RWs in the Braga area to be inundated, and 857 people from 400 families were affected.
When the Acting Governor came to the area, Friday morning the puddle of water was no longer visible, but left quite thick mud material and also rubbish scattered in the settlement.
Residents, assisted by officers, worked together to clean up the mud and rubbish in a cooperative manner.
Acting Bey Machmudin then expressed his concern about this incident. He also encouraged the embankment repairs to be carried out immediately and it is hoped that they will be completed today.
"On behalf of the West Java Provincial Government, I express my concern regarding the flooding yesterday afternoon," said Bey Machmudin.
Bey said that the West Java Provincial Government continues to coordinate with the Bandung City Regional Government regarding various matters including needed improvements.
"In the next few days, rain with heavy and very heavy intensity is predicted to occur in West Java in particular. Therefore, people must be careful," said Bey Machmudin.
"Once again I remind you not to be in the open, look for a safe place and obey the instructions from the officers, don't ignore the instructions from the officers," he added.
"I ordered the Mayor of Bandung to immediately repair the embankment to deal with the breach, so it should be completed today," said Bey.
Until now, some of the affected residents are still in temporary refugee camps. "The public kitchen is ready, health is ready, the Bandung City Fire and Rescue Department and the Provincial BPBD are also ready," said Bey.
Bey Machmudin also expressed his highest gratitude to the people who voluntarily provided assistance to each other.
Meanwhile, Head of the Bandung Class I Geophysical Station, Teguh Rahayu, advised the public to remain alert as extreme weather can occur at any time.
Based on his forecast, the current weather intensity, especially in the next week, still has the potential for moderate to heavy rain, and also very heavy rain.
When heavy rain occurs with an intensity of more than two hours, residents, especially those living near river flows, can immediately take anticipatory steps by moving to a place that they feel is safer.
"So the public is advised to always be alert and when we see rain with intensity for two hours in a row that doesn't stop, it would be better for us to immediately evacuate ourselves to a safer place," he said.
