PORTALJABAR, BANDUNG CITY - The Bandung City Government emphasized the importance of the community's role in managing waste, especially at the neighborhood unit (RT) level.
This was conveyed by the Mayor of Bandung, Muhammad Farhan, when inaugurating the Independent Waste House in RT 07 RW 03, Cijagra Village, Lengkong District (26/4/2025).
Muhammad Farhan said that the waste problem cannot only be left to the government, but must be resolved through collaboration with the community.
"The waste problem is a problem that we must solve together. The government cannot work alone without the support of the community. Good waste management starts from home, from the RT, from all of us," he said.
According to him, RT-based waste management is a strategic solution, considering that the daily volume of waste in Bandung City continues to increase and requires active cooperation between the government and the community.
One of the concepts promoted in this management is the principle of “today's waste, finished today” in order to reduce the burden on the Final Disposal Site (TPA).
Muhammad Farhan gave his appreciation to the residents of RT 07 who had built an independent waste processing house in a simple but effective way.
"This is a real example of how the community can become a 'champion' in managing waste. Throughout Bandung, only 412 RW manage waste independently, and RT 07 is one of those that has succeeded in showing that waste management can run well," he said.
He hopes that the success of RT 07 can be an inspiration for other RTs in Bandung City to participate in independent waste management.
"We will continue to support and encourage more RTs to become 'champions' in waste management," he stressed.
Muhammad Farhan also invited all residents of Bandung City to care more about the environment.
Collaboration between the government and the community is needed to realize a clean, healthy and environmentally friendly city of Bandung.
"There is no competition in Bandung City, there is collaboration. We must work together to achieve better results," he said.
Meanwhile, Head of RT 07 RW 03 Amir Hamzah said that the independent waste house utilizes two waste processing methods, namely composting and maggotization, which are implemented with a simple and affordable system.
"We don't need sophisticated technology or large areas of land. The system we implement allows organic waste to be processed quickly, and the benefits can be felt directly by residents," said Amir.
The inauguration of the Independent Waste House is expected to be the first step for more areas in Bandung City to develop community-based waste management, as well as increase awareness of the importance of environmental cleanliness at the community level.
