PORTALJABAR, BANDUNG CITY - West Java's economy grew 5.73 percent (yoy) in the second quarter of 2026. Year-on-year growth in West Java was higher than the national economic growth of 5.29 percent.

The Head of the West Java Central Statistics Agency (BPS), Margaretha Ari Anggorowati, stated that in terms of production, the Government Administration, Defense, and Mandatory Social Security Business Sector experienced the highest growth at 18.28 percent. In terms of expenditure, the Government Consumption Expenditure (PK-P) component experienced the highest growth at 40.24 percent.

The manufacturing industry contributed the most to West Java's economic growth (SOG) from a business perspective in the second quarter of 2026 (year-on-year), contributing 1.96 percent. Meanwhile, from an expenditure perspective, the largest positive contribution to growth came from Household Consumption Expenditure, contributing 3.03 percent.

Meanwhile, on a quarter-to-quarter basis, West Java's economy grew 2.25 percent in the second quarter of 2026 compared to the previous quarter. On the production side, the Government Administration, Defense, and Mandatory Social Security sectors experienced the highest growth at 12.67 percent. Meanwhile, on the expenditure side, the Government Consumption Expenditure (PK-P) component experienced the highest growth at 7.96 percent.

The number of poor people is decreasing

On the same occasion, Margaretha stated that the percentage of the poor population in West Java in March 2026 was 6.54 percent, a decrease of 0.24 percentage points compared to September 2025 and a decrease of 0.49 percentage points compared to March 2025.

"The number of poor people in March 2026 was 3.44 million people, a decrease of 114.23 thousand people compared to September 2025 and a decrease of 218.27 thousand people compared to March 2025," said Margaretha at the Official Statistics News Release for West Java Province at the West Java BPS Office, Wednesday (5/8/2026).

The poverty line in March 2026 was recorded at IDR 609,790/capita/month
with the composition of the Food Poverty Line of IDR 454,174 (74.48 percent)
and the Non-Food Poverty Line of IDR 155,616 (25.52 percent).

"The decline in the percentage of the poor is driven by various factors, one of which is expanding job opportunities. The 205,310-person increase in employment from February 2026 to May 2026 has resulted in increased family income, thus stabilizing purchasing power," said Margaretha.

In general, he continued, during the period March 2021–March 2026, the poverty rate in West Java showed a downward trend, both in terms of number and percentage, except in March 2022. The increase in the number and percentage of poor people in March 2022 was due to the increase in fuel prices.

The economic recovery following the Covid-19 pandemic is in line with the gradual decline in poverty rates from March 2022 to March 2026.
