PORTALJABAR, BANDUNG CITY - The Bandung City Government continues to accelerate waste management efforts ahead of the planned closure of the Sarimukti Final Disposal Site (TPA) in December 2026.
Bandung Mayor Muhammad Farhan said that currently the waste collection system in Bandung City is still facing operational limitations.
According to him, effective waste collection can only be carried out Monday through Thursday. On weekends, waste must be stored at Temporary Storage Sites (TPS).
"This is the real situation on the ground. From Friday to Sunday, we'll collect the materials first, then transport them on Monday," said Farhan at Teras Sunda Cibiru on Saturday (April 25).
Farhan explained that currently there are around 500 tons of waste per day that cannot be managed optimally.
To address this, the Bandung City Government is targeting an increase in waste processing capacity of up to 600 tons per day within the next two months.
These efforts are carried out by strengthening regional-based waste processing at the RW level through a circular economy program.
The program includes organic waste processing, urban farming development, and healthy kitchen management in the community.
In addition, the Bandung City Government also plans to build 36 waste processing facilities at the sub-district level with various technologies, ranging from organic processing to thermal technology.
However, Farhan acknowledged that the biggest challenge currently is the still low capacity for waste management at the community level.
"To date, less than 10 percent of neighborhood units (RW) are able to manage waste independently," he said.
He emphasized that in the future, organic waste processing must be completed at the regional level so that it is no longer all taken to final disposal sites.
"Our target is to eliminate organic waste at the neighborhood unit (RW) level. This is a tough task, but we must achieve it," said Farhan.
