PORTALJABAR, DISTRICT. GARUT - In celebration of the 95th Mother's Day, the Garut Regency Population Control, Family Planning, Women's Empowerment and Child Protection (DPPKBPPPA) Service, in collaboration with the Mother's Day Committee, the Indonesian Women's Coalition, and the Terra Gymnastics Team held a Commemoration of Anti-Violence Against Women Day at Garut Square (6/12/2023).
Mother's Day Committee Advisor, Diah Kurniasari, said that this activity was part of the 16 Days Anti-Violence against Women Campaign which is held every year in Garut Regency. Diah invited the public, especially women, to be aware of women's rights and dare to report if they experience violence.
"We are enthusiastic and have the courage to report if we experience physical, mental and other violence. Women must be aware of this because we have the right to freedom, the women of Garut Regency," said Diah.
Head of the Garut DPPKBPPPA Women's Empowerment Division, Iriani, explained that this activity was also part of the socialization regarding the Sexual Violence Crime Law (TPKS). He reminded that in Garut Regency there are regulations related to the protection of women, such as Regional Regulation Number 13 of 2016 concerning the Protection of Women, Regional Regulation concerning Child Friendly Cities, and Regional Regulation Number 10 of 2020 concerning Gender Mainstreaming in Development.
"It is hoped that with this law, cases that have been floating around or that have not been able to be resolved will become stronger, because there is already a Law on Crimes of Sexual Violence," he said.
Iriani hopes that this outreach can reach all levels of society, including in rural areas. He also revealed that the number of cases of violence against women in Garut Regency in 2023 will be 34 cases and violence against children, including sexual, will be 123 cases.
"It is hoped that with this momentum, the public will know that now there are regulations, there are already reinforcements regarding criminal acts of sexual violence, so it is hoped that the public will be able to report it, so they will have the courage to report it and later become pioneers," he said.
Chief Executive of the 95th Mother's Day, Nina Herlina, detailed several activities including health checks and health seminars by the Indonesian Doctors Association (IDI), which will last until December 22. Nina hopes for participation from various organizations to work together to end violence against women.
"Participants from all combined organizations within the GOW (Association of Women's Organizations) hope to commit together to end violence against women," he concluded.
