PORTALJABAR, BANDUNG CITY - Tatar Sunda Day will continue to be commemorated every May 18th, starting this year. The establishment of Tatar Sunda Day has been formalized through West Java Governor Regulation (Pergub) Number 13 of 2026 concerning the Implementation of Tatar Sunda Day.

The gubernatorial regulation states that the commemoration of Tatar Sunda Day will include a procession, a journey from one place to another with a cultural theme and a Sawala. This activity involves various elements of the community to foster camaraderie and foster collaboration.

Head of the West Java Province Tourism and Culture Office, Iendra Sofyan, said the procession will take place from May 2, 2026, to May 18, 2026.

"Milangkala Tatar Sunda takes the theme Nyuhun Buhun, Nata Nagara. This means reviving the good traditions of our ancestors, linked to efforts to organize the nation, or in this case, West Java, with good values," he explained at a media conference at Gedung Sate on Friday (May 1, 2026).

Three activities will take place starting Saturday (May 2, 2026). They will begin with a retracing of the Tatar Pasundan heritage at eight locations, starting in Sumedang Regency and ending in Cirebon Regency.

The second event will be a cultural carnival in Bandung on May 16, 2026, with 27 district/city governments in West Java participating. The route will begin at the Struggle Monument and end at Gedung Sate. The event will culminate on May 17, 2026, with a colossal performance featuring Sujiwo Tedjo.

Iendra stated that the original Binokasih Crown and a replica will be brought along during the retracing. The original crown will be closely guarded due to its immeasurable historical and material value.

"The Binokasih Crown will be escorted in a carriage along with the governor, deputy governor, and regents/mayors. Behind it will be accompanied by arts performances from 27 regencies/cities, such as Reak from Bandung, Sasapian Buhun from West Java, and others," he explained.

Fourteen groups will participate in the approximately 1-1.5 kilometer procession. The procession will begin at 7:00 PM and 10:00 PM WIB. Additional indigenous groups will be joining the procession in Bogor and Bandung.

"We want to reintroduce Sundanese culture to the public, traveling to eight locations and meeting people directly. This is to revive West Javanese culture, not to restore a kingdom," he said.
