PORTALJABAR, BANDUNG CITY - The 2024 elections will take place in February, the peak month of the rainy season in the West Java region.

There are many impacts that can be caused by high rainfall, including floods, landslides and flash floods, which often threaten a number of areas in West Java, especially disaster-prone areas.

Head of the Meteorology Climatology Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Dwikorita Karnawati said that these potentials must be anticipated by the West Java Provincial Government so that the elections taking place in West Java can run smoothly.

"We conveyed to the West Java Provincial Government the need for preparedness to face the peak of the rainy season which lasts from the end of January to March," said Dwikorita, at Gedung Sate, Tuesday (30/1/2024).

"We are coordinating with the Governor, BPBD on mitigation efforts so that high rainfall does not disrupt the implementation of the elections," he added.

According to Dwikorita, the current potential for rain is normal, with the monthly average for the last 30 years, there are no anomalies and can reach 400 millimeters in one month.

"However, on a daily basis, we can experience extremes with rainfall reaching more than 100 to 150 millimeters per day," he said.

Dwikorita stated that extreme weather conditions could disrupt the environment, cause damage, cause landslides, floods and flash floods.

"You need to be alert, check whether the river is blocked or not so that it doesn't cause flooding," he said.

Head of the Bandung Class I Geophysics Station, Teguh Rahayu, said that areas prone to hydrometeorological potential during the election were in the East and South West Java regions.

"Now and in the future we will enter the peak of the rainy season, so you have to be careful, especially the eastern and southern parts of West Java," he said. (no/rdp*)
