PORTALJABAR, BANDUNG CITY - The decline in staple food prices led to month-to-month (m-to-m) deflation in West Java in July 2026, reaching 0.05 percent. Among the staple foods experiencing price declines were shallots, red chilies, cayenne peppers, chicken eggs, and chicken meat.
Margaretha Ari Anggorowati, Head of the West Java Central Statistics Agency (BPS), stated that the decline in staple food prices was due to the bumper harvest in several producing areas. For example, the red onion harvest is taking place in Bandung Regency, Garut Regency, and areas outside West Java.
"Deflation was also caused by a decrease in demand for chicken meat and eggs during the school holidays due to the suspension of the Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) program," said Margaretha during the Official Statistics News Release for West Java Province, Monday (3/8/2026).
He detailed that the commodities contributing the highest month-to-month deflation in July 2026 were shallots (0.09 percent), red chilies (0.07 percent), gold jewelry (0.07 percent), cayenne pepper (0.05 percent), and chicken eggs (0.04 percent).
Meanwhile, the commodities that contributed the highest month-to-month inflation in July 2026 were gasoline (0.09 percent), cucumbers (0.02 percent), elementary school (0.02 percent), garlic (0.02 percent), and cars (0.01 percent).
Meanwhile, year-on-year inflation in West Java reached 2.72 percent in July 2026. The commodities with the highest year-on-year inflation contributions in July 2026 were gold jewelry (0.62 percent), gasoline (0.31 percent), cooking oil (0.16 percent), rice (0.13 percent), and machine-rolled kretek cigarettes (0.09 percent).
Export import
On the same occasion, the West Java Statistics Agency (BPS) also reported on West Java's export-import developments. Margaretha stated that West Java's trade balance recorded a surplus of USD 13.79 billion from January to June 2026.
This was due to West Java's exports reaching USD 19.60 billion, exceeding imports of USD 5.81 billion. West Java's export value during this period increased by 5.11 percent compared to the same period in 2025.
The largest market share for non-oil and gas exports from January to June 2026 was to the United States, amounting to USD 3.26 billion, followed by the Philippines at USD 1.74 billion and Japan at USD 1.40 billion, with the three contributing 32.95 percent to exports.
