PORTALJABAR, BANDUNG CITY - Bandung Zoo is currently receiving serious attention from the Bandung City Government following the death of two tiger cubs aged around eight months.

Bandung Mayor Muhammad Farhan revealed that the analysis results had confirmed that the cause of the animal's death was a distemper virus infection.

The distemper virus is one of the most deadly diseases that often attacks the cat family, especially in cats under one year of age.

The danger level is very high because until now there is no truly effective treatment, unless the animal has a strong immune system.

"This virus is very dangerous for kittens. Treatment is difficult because medications aren't always effective, so it relies heavily on immunity," he said at Bandung City Hall on Friday (March 27, 2026).

In response to this incident, the Bandung City Government is paying great attention to strengthening the biosecurity system at the zoo.

Farhan said that animal health security measures are now a top priority to prevent similar incidents from happening again in the future.

He also said that an official written report regarding the condition and readiness of the zoo would be received in the near future.

The report will be the basis for starting the selection process for managing partners of legally incorporated conservation institutions who will collaborate in managing the zoo.

"This collaboration will be valid for the next 20 years, so the selection process must be carried out strictly and professionally," said Farhan.

Farhan confirmed that the process proceeded without a hitch. In fact, this incident served as a crucial evaluation opportunity to improve management standards, particularly in biosecurity.

On that occasion, he also appreciated the collaboration of various parties involved in handling this case, starting from the West Java BKSDA, the West Java Provincial Forestry Service, animal hospitals, to the Bandung City Food Security and Agriculture Service.

Meanwhile, regarding the zoo's management partners, Farhan said that until now no parties have been officially announced.

The selection process will continue to be conducted openly and transparently to identify the best partners for wildlife conservation management in Bandung City. (Bandung City Communications and Information Service/rka)
