PORTALJABAR, BANDUNG CITY - West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi has instructed mountain area managers to temporarily close the area to climbing activities. This aims to prevent land fires in the mountains during the dry season.

Dedi worries that the fires lit by climbers could trigger wildfires. Similarly, discarded cigarette butts could also start fires.

"Mountain climbing has been temporarily closed due to concerns that climbers will light fires," said KDM, Dedi Mulyadi's nickname, Monday (31/8/2026).

According to data from the West Java Regional Disaster Management Agency, 228.07 hectares of land and forest burned in West Java as of August 31, 2026. The fires affected 178 villages/sub-districts in 107 districts.

The total number of fire incidents was 156. The three regencies/cities with the most fires were Sumedang Regency (21 incidents), Majalengka Regency (17 incidents), and Bandung Regency (16 incidents).

Meanwhile, based on land area, the largest fires occurred in Sukabumi Regency (49.20 hectares), Majalengka Regency (26.16 hectares), and Bandung Regency (24.80 hectares).
