PORTALJABAR, BANDUNG CITY - To increase the effectiveness of organic waste management, Husein Sastranegara Urban Village, Cicendo District, implemented the Jempol Soma Movement (Pick Up and Process Community Organic Waste).
This program has successfully collected and processed 1,047 kg of organic waste from residents and business actors in several RWs, which is processed at the Maggot House for the cultivation of maggot larvae (BSF).
The organic waste comes from each RW and local businesses in the sub-district environment with details; RW 01 independently processes 5 kg as animal feed, RW 02 to RW 12 submit a total of 1,042 kg of organic waste to Rumah Maggot.
Head of the Economic and Development Section of Husein Sastranegara Village, Deni Santosa, said that the Jempol Soma movement is real evidence that organic waste management can provide great benefits for the environment and society.
"We want the public to be more aware of the importance of waste sorting, while also supporting this program to create economic value from organic waste," he said (11/13/2024).
The processing stages include sorting, fermentation, and shredding waste into 326 kg of maggot feed. As a result of cultivation, 40 kg of kasgot, 9 kg of pupae, and 82.5 grams of maggot eggs were harvested for the next breeding cycle.
All activities were closed by spraying Em4 (a liquid containing fermentation bacteria) and setting up facilities in the maggot cultivation area.
"With Jempol Soma, we hope to reduce organic waste that is simply thrown away and at the same time provide opportunities for the community in maggot cultivation. This is a small step but has a big impact on our environment," he said.
The Soma Thumb Movement is an innovation in organic waste management in Husein Sastranegara, converting waste into valuable products for animal feed, reducing environmental burdens, and creating a sustainable maggot cultivation ecosystem. (Bandung City Communication and Information Service/Fauziah)
