PORTALJABAR, BANDUNG CITY - An atmosphere full of enthusiasm and emotion enveloped Cikapayang Park, Dago, Bandung City, Sunday (4/20/2025), when hundreds of residents attended the commemoration of International Autism Awareness Day at the Bandung City Level. This is an important momentum to echo the values of inclusivity and awareness of individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
The event began with a musical performance by children with disabilities and autism who appeared confidently on stage. Cheers and applause from the audience were a form of appreciation and support for their courage.
After the show, participants joined together in the “Walk for Autism”, a fun walk through the Dago Car Free Day (CFD) area filled with the spirit of solidarity and togetherness.
This commemoration is actually held every April 2nd coinciding with World Autism Awareness Day. However, this year, its implementation was postponed to April 20th without reducing the essence of the celebration.
The Mayor of Bandung, Muhammad Farhan, who attended the event in person, said that Bandung is a friendly city for all its citizens, including those in vulnerable groups.
"The city of Bandung will always be open to anyone. The meaning of 'open' is inclusivity. The city of Bandung belongs to everyone. Bandung is not an exclusive city, but a city of karamah that pays attention to the interests of every group," said Farhan.
He also mentioned the importance of learning from parents and children with autism about how to guard the heart and build empathy. According to him, diversity is a strength that makes Bandung special.
"Walk for Autism in Cikapayang is a symbol of joy in diversity. This is a characteristic of Bandung. Alhamdulillah, we can say that Bandung is an open and livable city for anyone regardless of background," he said.
Furthermore, Farhan explained, this commemoration is not just a ceremony, but a means to continue to raise awareness about autism every year.
"World Autism Awareness Day means raising awareness about the existence of autism, the behavior that accompanies it, and its treatment. Autism is now everywhere, and this awareness must continue to be built," he said. (Bandung City Communication and Information Office/RKA)
