PORTALJABAR, BANDUNG CITY - In a series of Simultaneous Harvest activities held in 14 provinces online, the Food Security and Agriculture Service (DKPP) handed over 1 ton of superior rice seeds from independent cultivation to farmers in Cipamokolan Village, Rancasari District.
This handover is an important milestone in the journey of Bandung city agriculture because it shows the success of the independent seeding program initiated by DKPP.
Head of DKPP of Bandung City, Gin Gin Ginanjar said that Bandung is one of the cities in Indonesia that has carried out independent and systematic seeding.
"Currently, we have a 4,000 square meter seeding area. In the future, to produce 15 tons of seeds, we need 3 hectares of land. That is a very realistic target because we have full support from farmers and the city government," explained Gin Gin at the Simultaneous Rice Harvest event in Rancasari, Monday (7/4/2025)
The seeds developed are the result of a selection of superior local varieties that have been proven to provide high yields, with resistance to pests and are suitable for agricultural land conditions in the city of Bandung.
According to field reports, farmers also welcomed the seeds from these breeding programs positively because of their good quality and better suitability to local needs.
Meanwhile, the Mayor of Bandung, Muhammad Farhan, in his speech said that seed independence is one of the strategic steps in realizing sustainable city food security.
"With our own seeds, we are not dependent on external supplies. We have control over the quality and planting time. This is important to face various global threats that can affect food distribution," he said.
He also expressed his appreciation to the farmers of Bandung City who have worked hard and consistently to maintain agriculture amidst the challenges of urbanization.
"For me, Bandung City farmers are heroes. We cannot talk about food security without them," he concluded.
The symbolic handover of seeds was carried out by the Mayor to representatives of farmers, witnessed directly by the Forkopimda, DKPP, sub-district officials, and the surrounding community.
It is hoped that this program will continue to grow so that Bandung can be self-sufficient in food and at the same time become an example for other cities in Indonesia. (Bandung City Government Public Relations/rka)
