PORTALJABAR, BANDUNG CITY - The Bandung City Government (Pemkot) is encouraging community-based waste management by utilizing used plastic bags into useful products.

The Masagi Cibogo Community processes the waste into wallets, shopping bags, laptop bags, and seat mats to reduce waste generation.

The community from Cibogo Village, RT 04 RW 04, Sukawarna Subdistrict, Sukajadi District, introduced its products at the Tamansari Arts and Culture Festival on August 15, 2026.

Masagi Cibogo Community member Enung Siti Oliah said the processing is carried out through a weaving process to produce various items that can be reused.

"We sell products made from used plastic bag waste. We process them, weave them, and then weave them into useful products," said Enung.

This processing helps divert plastic bags from temporary landfills while opening up economic opportunities for the community.

"We simply want to campaign for the public to be responsible for their waste," he said.

Wallets made from woven plastic bags are one of the products most in demand by the public during this activity.

Other products include shopping bags, laptop bags, and woven items measuring approximately 40×40 centimeters for sitting mats or mats.

Product prices range from Rp. 75,000 to more than Rp. 200,000 depending on the type, level of difficulty, and processing time.

Enung explained that most of the production process is still done manually, thus requiring precision and skill from residents.

"For weaving, some can take a day, while others can take a week. Shopping bags, in particular, take about two weeks to complete, from weaving to making a bag like this," Enung explained.

Making a shopping bag takes different amounts of time for each part, with the body of the bag taking about a week to weave.

The utilization of this waste shows that waste management can produce creative products while increasing public awareness of environmental responsibility.

Community activities also open up economic opportunities by transforming materials previously considered worthless into usable and marketable goods.

The Bandung City Government encourages similar practices so that waste reduction goes hand in hand with community empowerment and the development of environmentally-based creative products.
