PORTALJABAR, BANDUNG CITY - Acting (Pj.) Chair of the West Java Province PKK Driving Team (TP) Amanda Soemedi Bey Machmudin said that the competition for the use of patchwork waste was a commitment of the West Java PKK TP to reduce household waste from the clothing sector.

"The increasing popularity of fast fashion sales has resulted in the amount of fabric waste in the world becoming increasingly worrying," said Amanda in the West Java PKK Secretariat Office Hall, Wednesday (10/7/2024).

Quoting Fibre2Fashion, Amanda said that in 2020 it was recorded that around 18.6 million tons of fabric waste were thrown away and ended up in the sea. According to him, the average person throws away 60 percent of their clothes within a year after buying them.

If this continues, fabric waste worldwide will reach 300 million tons in 2050. This figure exceeds plastic waste.

"Fabric waste does not only come from consumers but also from producers. The Nexus3 Foundation recorded that there are 1,000 garment factories that dump toxic chemical waste from their production into the Citarum River," said Amanda.

"So, if this is allowed to drag on, this problem will not be resolved and will even be a bad legacy for our children and grandchildren in the future," he added.

Amanda stated that the competition for using fabric waste aims to invite cadres to commit to reducing fabric waste using the 5R method, namely refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose, recycle.

This activity is also a form of realization of the West Java PKK III working group program in the clothing sector. This competition was attended by three participants from each city and district.

"We invite PKK cadres to be creative, so that processing rags into useful goods, and the results of their work can add to the family economy," he said.
