PORTALJABAR, BANDUNG CITY - The Bandung City Government (Pemkot) is preparing a new program for waste processing and disposal which will start running at the end of April 2025.
This step was taken to follow up on public complaints regarding the increasing volume of garbage piles.
Bandung Mayor, Muhammad Farhan, said the main target of this program is to independently process and destroy up to 30 percent of Bandung City's waste.
The Waste Free Area (KBS) program will also be re-intensified as part of a sustainable environmental management strategy.
"Currently, there are only 413 Waste-Free Areas from the target of 1,597. We will accelerate so that by the end of the year at least 1,000 KBS points can be achieved," he explained at Bandung City Hall, Monday, (14/4/2025).
In addition to improving processing facilities, the Bandung City Government will also utilize technology to monitor residents' behavior in disposing of waste.
In the near future, the city government will release a map of illegal waste disposal points recorded via closed-circuit television (CCTV).
"There is already CCTV showing violators. There was one person recorded seven times littering. Some even threw it from a motorbike. This is not just a minor violation, but reflects our responsibility as citizens," Farhan stressed.
He added that waste management is a shared responsibility between the community and the government, as regulated by law.
Unfortunately, sanctions for violators are often only categorized as minor crimes so they do not have a deterrent effect.
"We will continue to educate and give warnings. But if they continue to violate, yes the consequences must be accepted. We all must be aware, garbage is our shared responsibility," he concluded. (Bandung City Communications and Information Service/Fauziah)
