PORTALJABAR, BANDUNG CITY - The Bandung City Government affirmed its commitment to realizing an elderly-friendly city through health programs, social protection, inclusive public spaces, and empowerment so that the elderly remain active and productive in community life at the commemoration of the 30th National Elderly Day (HLUN) at the Kodam III/Siliwangi Headquarters (20/6/2026).
Bandung City Government and Public Welfare Assistant Asep Cucu Cahyadi said that the elderly are an important part of the development journey, possessing experience, wisdom, and life values that need to be respected.
"When we look at the elderly, we are actually witnessing a library of life that is still open. Within it are stories of struggles to build families, raise generations, maintain unity, and witness the various changes of the times," said Asep.
Asep emphasized that a city's progress is not only measured by physical and economic development, but also by the extent to which the government pays attention to elders as part of development.
He emphasized the importance of building intergenerational bridges so that the experiences of the elderly can serve as lessons for the younger generation in building a better city.
"We must not become a generation that is quick to seek information from gadgets but slow to learn from our parents' experiences," he explained.
Head of the Bandung City Social Service, Yorisa Sativa, said that the number of elderly people in Bandung City continues to increase by around five percent every year, with one in eight residents falling into the elderly category.
Yorisa explained that there are around 91,000 elderly people in the low-income group, with 25,000 of them having received social assistance, while 66,000 others still need support.
In addition, there are around 4,600 elderly people living alone, 3,800 elderly people who are neglected, and 301 elderly people who live alone and are neglected.
The Bandung City Government continues to strengthen services for the elderly through the provision of medical equipment, mobility aids, social protection, shelters, family reunification, and empowerment programs based on cross-sector collaboration.
Through pentahelix collaboration, the Bandung City Government hopes to create an increasingly friendly environment for the elderly so they can live healthy, independent, active, and dignified lives.
