PORTALJABAR, BANDUNG CITY - Bandung Mayor Muhammad Farhan asked all levels of the Bandung City Government to increase preparedness in facing extreme weather to protect residents from the risk of flooding and landslides (26/1/2026).
Farhan delivered this directive during the morning assembly at the Bandung City Hall Plaza, which was attended by civil servants from across regional agencies.
Muhammad Farhan stated that climate change is a reality that must be faced with careful planning so that its impacts do not harm the community.
"We can't blame the weather; we should blame ourselves if we're not prepared to anticipate the impact," Farhan said.
He cited the hydrometeorological disaster in West Bandung Regency as an example as an early warning for Bandung City to be more responsive in mitigating the situation.
Farhan highlighted the increasingly vulnerable northern area of Bandung City due to the reduction in forest cover from west to east.
These environmental conditions increase the potential for flooding, landslides, and disruption to public safety during extreme rain.
On that occasion, Farhan appreciated the Social Services Agency, the Regional Disaster Management Agency, and the Bandung City Fire and Rescue Service for their swift response to the emergency situation.
"Quick action must be the standard, don't wait for something to go viral before acting," Farhan emphasized.
He emphasized that handling extreme weather requires cross-sectoral collaboration, ranging from regional planning, drainage, disaster preparedness, to public education.
Farhan hopes that these anticipatory measures will reduce casualties and losses for residents when extreme weather hits Bandung City.
