PORTALJABAR, BANDUNG CITY - The Bandung City Regional Government continues to accelerate the arrangement of overhead cables which have been considered chaotic and dangerous.
Since 2022, the cable tidying has reached a total length of around 123 kilometers and will continue to be carried out in stages until the entire city area is free from overhead cables.
Deputy Mayor of Bandung, Erwin, assessed that this arrangement concerns the security and aesthetics of the city, especially as a tourist destination.
"There are many reports from residents, including tragic cases of residents who died because their kites got caught in cables. This is a serious concern. We want Bandung to be safer and more beautiful," said Erwin, while directly reviewing the process of tidying up cables on Jalan PSM, Kiaracondong, Tuesday (4/15/2025).
In this effort, the Bandung City Government is working together with the Association of Telecommunication Network Providers (Apjatel) and service providers. At several points, the cables that are stretched across the air are starting to be tidied up.
"We are targeting Bandung to be free from overhead cables. It is gradual, but we use the cutting method so that the transfer is faster and more efficient," he added.
Meanwhile, the Head of Infrastructure and ICT Division of the Bandung City Communication and Information Service, Mahyudin, explained that the cable arrangement had been carried out since 2022 with details of 30 km in that year, 42 km in 2023, and around 40 km in 2024. Meanwhile, until April 2025, around 11 km of cables had been tidied up.
"Our current focus is on protocol routes such as Jalan Dago and Jalan Riau which are already free of cables. But in general, almost all sub-districts in Bandung still face the challenge of messy cables, especially in densely populated areas," he said.
He said the government had imposed strict sanctions on operators who did not comply with the clean-up commitment.
"If they pull new cables without tidying them up, we'll just cut them," Mahyudin stressed.
The same thing was conveyed by the Head of Apjatel West Java, Yudiana Arifin. He stated that he consistently supports government programs, including routine activities every Tuesday with operators.
"We went directly to the field. If there are any who are stubborn, the government will immediately cut the cables. It has been done in Dago and Riau. We all agree, Bandung must be free of messy cables for the safety and beauty of the city," said Yudi.
With this cross-party cooperation, the Bandung City Government is targeting that this city can become a national model in the arrangement of neat and integrated overhead cables, while also encouraging increased comfort for residents and tourists.
