PORTALJABAR, CIAMIS REGENCY - The Ciamis Regency Government held a ceremony to commemorate the 98th Youth Pledge Day at the Ciamis Regency Hall on Wednesday (October 28, 2026). This year's commemoration carried the theme "Patriotic, Persistent, Empathetic: Youth for Indonesia," a reminder of the importance of building character for the next generation.

Acting as ceremony inspector, Ciamis Regent Herdiat Sunarya led the procession. On the occasion, Herdiat read a written message from the Minister of Youth and Sports of the Republic of Indonesia, Erick Thohir, addressed to all youth in the country.

Beginning his address, Herdiat encouraged the ceremony participants to remember the struggles of their predecessors. He emphasized that the spirit of unity initiated nearly a century ago should not simply be a historical spectacle.

"Ninety-eight years ago, Indonesian youth made a promise. A promise that united differences, a promise that strengthened the struggle, and a promise that gave birth to the determination to stand as one nation, Indonesia," said Herdiat.

He further highlighted the significance of a nation's progress. Indonesia's development should not rely solely on physical splendor or infrastructure advancement, but must be rooted in the quality of its human resources.

"We want to build a progressive Indonesia. But progress isn't just about towering buildings, increasingly sophisticated technology, or abundant wealth. True progress begins with people, with character, with a heart that loves the homeland, with a spirit that never gives up, and with concern for others," Herdiat emphasized.

In line with this year's theme, youth are urged to cultivate a spirit of patriotism, tenacity, and empathy. Patriotism must be demonstrated through concrete actions and dedication, not mere rhetoric. Meanwhile, tenacity is reflected in mental resilience in the face of adversity and a spirit of never giving up before giving one's best.

The aspect of social awareness is also emphasized. Young people are reminded not to fall into the trap of egocentrism, which only pursues personal success without regard for the social conditions around them.

"Empathic youth are those who think not only of their own success but also feel the hardships of their fellow human beings. They don't turn away when they see people in need. Progress without humanity is not true progress," he continued.

Closing the message, Herdiat conveyed a message to the young generation in Ciamis Regency to dare to dream as high as the sky and work as hard as possible, without losing the gentleness of heart to serve and help others in need.
