PORTALJABAR, BANDUNG CITY - The Bandung City Government (Pemkot) together with the central government and the West Java Provincial Government will prioritize improving public street lighting (PJU) along Jalan Soekarno-Hatta.

This step is the result of cross-agency coordination involving Commission V of the Indonesian House of Representatives, the Ministry of Public Works, the West Java Transportation Agency, and the Bandung City Transportation Agency.

Bandung Mayor Muhammad Farhan said the discussion was led directly by the Deputy Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives and Coordinator of Infrastructure and Regional Development, Saan Mustopa, along with the leadership of Commission V of the Indonesian House of Representatives and the Ministry of Public Works.

According to Farhan, in addition to adding and repairing street lighting on Jalan Soekarno-Hatta, the government is also working to repair a number of roads directly connected to the corridor through funding support from the central government.

"Coordination between the central, provincial, and city governments is ongoing. The first priority is public street lighting along Jalan Soekarno-Hatta, as directed by the Governor of West Java," he said on Monday (August 10, 2026).

In addition to adding lighting infrastructure, the Bandung City Government is also preparing to implement a technology-based managed service system to monitor streetlight conditions in real time.

The system will be integrated with the Bandung Command Center and Area Traffic Control System (ATCS).

Farhan explained that the process of handling dead street lights still takes time because we have to wait for reports from the public via the 112 emergency service, followed by a field survey and the repair process.

"Once this managed service technology system is operational, we can have a dashboard connected to the command center. From there, we can immediately see which points are damaged or down, so staff can immediately initiate repairs," he said.

The cooperation scheme is planned to last for three years. According to Farhan, the cooperation period must be adjusted to the provisions governing the term of office of regional heads.

For the Soekarno-Hatta Road area itself, the number of PJU points that will be part of the system is estimated to reach almost 4,000 points, including lighting on a number of flyovers and other supporting infrastructure.

In addition to street lighting, the Bandung City Government also plans to add pedestrian bridges (JPOs). Two locations confirmed for construction are in front of SMKN 7 and SMKN 9 Bandung.

Meanwhile, the proposed construction of JPOs in other locations will still be discussed with the provincial and central governments considering that Jalan Soekarno-Hatta is a national road.

On the same occasion, Farhan also responded to the aspirations of the cycling community regarding safe cycling routes in the city of Bandung.

He revealed that he had instructed the Bandung City Transportation Agency to strengthen communication with the cycling community in determining road sections that are safe and comfortable for cyclists.

"I noticed that some bicycle lane markings haven't been colored green yet. They're likely still awaiting input and approval from the cycling community. Therefore, communication between the community and the Transportation Agency is crucial to ensure that the policies adopted truly meet the needs of cyclists," he said.

The Bandung City Government hopes that collaboration between the central, provincial, and city governments and the community can accelerate improvements in road user safety, both through improving lighting, building crossing facilities, and strengthening the bicycle lane network in Bandung City.
