PORTALJABAR, BANDUNG CITY - The Governor of West Java, Dedi Mulyadi, facilitated 18 female students of SMKN 2 Garut to have their hair trimmed at a professional salon as a step towards mental recovery and self-confidence following the polemic regarding hair cutting in the school environment (6/5/2026).
Dedi Mulyadi also met directly with students and parents to listen to complaints and ensure that the handling was carried out openly.
"Yesterday, the parents met with me, and the students met. There were 18 of them, and it's all over," said Dedi Mulyadi.
The West Java Provincial Government considers a recovery approach important to ensure the psychological well-being of students after the incident became public attention.
"This afternoon, there will be a full video on my YouTube channel so you can clearly see what was done," said Dedi.
The hair cutting incident occurred at SMKN 2 Garut when a number of female students had finished their sports lesson and were visited by the guidance and counseling teacher for a disciplinary check.
The hair cutting action sparked protests from parents of students because it was considered to be carried out without a persuasive approach, including towards female students wearing hijab.
The principal of SMKN 2 Garut, Nur Al Purqon, confirmed that the hair of students who were deemed to have violated school rules regarding hair coloring had been cut.
"The hair cutting of children whose hair was dyed occurred due to an accumulation of reports from homeroom teachers and the community that vocational school students had colored hair," said Nur Al Purqon.
The school admitted that it had apologized to the affected students and was trying to resolve the issue amicably.
The West Java Provincial Government hopes that the handling of this case will serve as an evaluation so that disciplinary development in schools continues to prioritize an educational approach and respect students' rights.
