PORTALJABAR, BANDUNG CITY - The Mayor of Bandung, Muhammad Farhan, believes that gateball can be a form of activity for senior citizens to maintain physical fitness and maintain mental sharpness.
He conveyed this when opening the 2026 Spirit '70plus Open Gateball Tournament to compete for the Bandung Mayor's Rotating Cup at the Bikasoga Gateball 5 Stadium Field, Saturday (10/10/2026).
Farhan said that physical activity needs to continue as people age. Through sports like gateball, seniors are encouraged to stay active to maintain muscle strength and joint function.
"The important thing is to always be able to move. Well, this muscle movement is what everyone should be doing," said Farhan.
He believes that activity spaces for "senior citizens" need to be maintained and continuously filled with a variety of activities. This way, residents who are no longer of productive age or younger still have the opportunity to maintain their fitness and quality of life.
Farhan believes that gateball doesn't just rely on physical ability, but also requires strategy. This element makes gateball an activity that also involves the players' thinking skills.
"Because, if you play gateball without a strategy, of course it won't work," he said.
On that occasion, Farhan welcomed the contingent participating in the tournament. He hoped that all participants would compete well and uphold fairness throughout the competition. He also advised the referees and officials to carry out their duties fairly.
The Spirit '70plus Open Gateball Tournament is a sporting activity that brings together senior players in an atmosphere of competition and togetherness.
Through activities like this, it is hoped that Bandung's sports facilities will continue to be utilized to support senior citizens in staying active and fit. (Bandung City Communications and Information Service/rka)
