PORTALJABAR, BANDUNG CITY - The Mayor of Bandung highlighted the still low coverage of areas implementing active waste sorting. Until now, only around 30 percent of areas in Bandung City have implemented an organic and non-organic waste sorting system.

He conveyed this while reviewing the Alun-alun and Pendopo areas of Bandung City, Thursday (18/4/2025).

He reiterated the Bandung City Government's commitment to the flagship waste management program, namely "Today's Waste, Today's Waste".

"Ideally, we have a system for collecting organic and non-organic waste separately. But this is a long process. Currently, only less than 30 percent of Bandung has implemented a waste-free area," he said.

The “Today’s Garbage, Today’s Out” program was initiated as a concrete solution to overcome the accumulation of daily garbage.

In this system, waste produced by residents must be handled and processed immediately on the same day, without letting it settle.

However, the Mayor acknowledged that implementing this program comprehensively requires readiness from various sides, starting from the active role of the community to city infrastructure.

"We can't just rely on good intentions. It takes education, facilities, and time. We ask for the support of the community because this is not a one-day job," he said.

He also mentioned the importance of building and adding waste processing facilities, especially for organic waste.

"There must be two important facilities. First, a facility for processing organic waste such as maggots or compost. Second, a recycling facility for non-organic waste. We are preparing this in stages," he explained.

According to him, the government does not want to make empty promises to the public regarding solving the waste problem.

"We don't want to say 'tomorrow it will be finished'. But we are working seriously. This program must be in accordance with good governance. Follow the rules, educate the public, and build the system," he said.

This step is part of the Bandung City Government's efforts to create a clean, healthy and sustainable city.

The Mayor also hopes that this program can become a new culture for city residents in treating waste as a shared responsibility.
