PORTALJABAR, BANDUNG CITY - The Bandung City Government (Pemkot) will take over waste management in several markets in Bandung City. This is because the waste situation in Bandung has entered the emergency category.

The decision was taken after Bandung Mayor Muhammad Farhan held a meeting with the West Java Provincial Government's Environmental Service.

"The West Java Provincial Government has stated that this condition is very urgent. In the next 40 days there must be radical action to make changes," said Bandung Mayor Muhammad Farhan to the Bandung City Public Relations Team, Friday (2/5/2025).

As a form of rapid response, the Bandung City Government will build an organic waste processing facility directly at Gedebage Market. This facility is expected to be able to process organic waste from the market effectively and reduce the burden on the landfill.

The takeover of waste management will also be carried out at Pagarsih Market and Ulekan Market, which are said to have very poor management systems.

Meanwhile, for Ciwastra Market, Farhan said the condition is relatively better. The construction of the incinerator in the market is already underway and in the near future another unit will be added to increase the processing capacity.

However, the main attention is now focused on Caringin Market which has been a crucial point for waste problems in the city of Bandung.

Farhan said that residents around the market area are no longer allowed to throw garbage in the market area.

"I emphasize again! Residents in RT, RW, sub-districts, and districts around Caringin Market are not allowed to throw garbage into Caringin Market. That is a policy that must be enforced," he said.

To overcome the impact, the City Government will build waste processing and disposal facilities in several sub-districts and districts around Caringin Market. This step aims to reduce the burden of waste management in the market.

In addition, Farhan also emphasized that Caringin Market managers must start investing in organic waste processing machines.

"Caringin Market has an obligation to manage its waste independently. We will help supervise and find investors according to the direction of the Governor of West Java," he explained.

These steps are part of the Bandung City Government's grand strategy to improve waste management as a whole. The focus of improvement is on the market area as the main source of daily organic waste. (Bandung City Communication and Information Service/ Rani)
