PORTALJABAR, BANDUNG CITY - The Bandung City Government has prepared 220 regional-based waste processing points to reduce waste generation by up to 250 tons per day (1/7/2026).
The program is a strategy to reduce dependence on the Sarimukti Final Disposal Site, which faces quota restrictions with waste generation reaching 1,511 tons per day.
Syahriani, Head of the Waste Reduction Team at the Bandung City Environmental Agency, said waste management must begin as close to the source as possible.
"The quota limitation for the Sarimukti Landfill must be a catalyst for change. Bandung City can no longer rely on the old 'collect, transport, dispose' system. Moving forward, waste must be managed as close to its source as possible through household and regional management," he said.
The Bandung City Government is inventorying locations for facility construction to make it easier for residents to process waste in their respective environments.
The West Java Provincial Government supports the program through trials of Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) technology, while the Indonesian National Armed Forces Headquarters (TNI) has provided assistance in the form of waste processing machines.
"The development of up to 220 waste processing points is not just about adding infrastructure, but also about building a more independent and sustainable waste management ecosystem. The hope is that each region will be able to process most of its own waste, so that only residue is sent to the landfill," said Syahriani.
The Bandung City Government is targeting a waste reduction of 125 to 250 tons per day through organic processing, recycling of economically valuable waste, and RDF technology.
"We are targeting a waste reduction of 125 to 250 tons per day. However, the success of this target depends not only on technologies like RDF, but also on changes in people's behavior in sorting and reducing waste at the source," added Syahriani.
Member of Commission III of the Bandung City Regional People's Representative Council, Nunung Nurasiah, expressed support for accelerating waste management through legislative, budgeting, and oversight functions.
Nunung invites the public to get used to sorting household waste so that the volume of waste sent to the final disposal site continues to decrease.
