PORTALJABAR, BEKASI DISTRICT - Atha Fathurrahman, a student from SDN Waluya 02, won a gold medal in the IMEC Olympiad in Mathematics in Malaysia, (30/5/2026).

The second-grade student from North Cikarang District succeeded in demonstrating his mathematical abilities in an international competition.

"I was happy. Before my name was called, from Honorable Mention to second place, until my name was finally called, first place, I burst into tears," Atha said when met at school (August 7, 2026).

IMEC Olympiade is an international mathematics competition organized by the UniCEP Committee from Australia and attended by participants from various countries.

Atha participated in the selection stage through an online competition before getting the opportunity to appear in the final round in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

"The competition was in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. I went on a plane with my father, mother, and grandmother. We were there for about three days," said Atha.

Atha's parent, Rahman, said his son participated in various math competitions after receiving a scholarship from a tutoring institution.

"Initially, we took lessons at an institution, then Atha received a scholarship. From there, she participated in various online competitions, some of which were already internationally recognized. There were preliminary and final rounds, so it wasn't just about winning," Rahman explained.

In the final round, Atha won the Gold and Diamond categories after being able to answer around 90 percent of the questions correctly.

"In the finals in Malaysia yesterday, he won two categories: one Gold and one Diamond. Diamond is awarded for achieving 90 percent correct answers," he said.

Rahman said Atha's interest in mathematics grew naturally from an early age without any family pressure to take part in various competitions.

"As parents, we never forced him. Initially, he was interested in planets and round objects, then he became interested in countries, and from there, he started to enjoy counting. We saw his interest and then found a suitable platform," said Rahman.

Atha has been participating in math competitions since kindergarten and continues to develop her skills through various competitions.

"He's been participating in national math competitions since kindergarten. He only won the runner-up award at the time, but we saw that he already had talent and interest. When he got the opportunity through Olympic Champ, thank God, his talent was unleashed," he said.

The principal of SDN Waluya 02 Eber appreciated Atha's achievements and assessed that discipline is an important asset in developing students' potential.

"If you want to achieve, you have to be disciplined. If you want to be a good person, you also have to be disciplined. Discipline is part of the school program, and we continue to instill it in our children," Eber emphasized.

The school will introduce Atha's achievements to the school community as inspiration so that students and parents will be more motivated to develop their potential.

"We truly appreciate and are very impressed with Atha's achievements. Going forward, we will introduce Atha and our other high-achieving students to the school community. The goal is to encourage other children and parents to become even more motivated," he concluded.
