PORTALJABAR, BANDUNG CITY - The Bandung City Government (Pemkot) is encouraging the processing of household organic waste through the cultivation of maggots, which have economic value.

This education was presented through the United Bandung Maggot (MBB) booth at the 2026 Tamansari Arts and Culture Festival on August 15, 2026.

MBB is a forum of maggot activists from various sub-districts in Bandung City who collaborate with the Tamansari Community Self-Help Group (KSM).

MBB member Yusuf said the activity encouraged the public to understand how to process organic waste so that it doesn't end up piling up.

"We were invited to open a booth here to educate the local community about waste and waste management," Yusuf said on August 15, 2026.

Maggot cultivation uses Black Soldier Fly (BSF) larvae to help decompose organic waste more quickly.

"God willing, organic waste can be managed through maggots. It decomposes faster, poses no disease risk, and offers numerous benefits," said Yusuf.

The public can see the cultivation stages starting from BSF flies, eggs, baby maggots, fresh maggots, to the prepupa phase.

Fresh maggots can be used as animal feed, bird feed, and fishing bait according to community needs.

Meanwhile, kasgot or organic waste decomposition residue can be used as material for agricultural needs.

MBB also introduced liquid organic fertilizer (POC), eco-enzymes, boosters, and rumen as by-products of waste processing.

This processing makes organic waste have further benefits to support the agricultural and livestock needs of the community.

"Besides cleanliness, it will ultimately benefit them. They'll get the produce from the garden, so they don't have to go out to buy anything. At the very least, it will reduce community expenses," Yusuf explained.

Maggot cultivation also opens up business opportunities by utilizing waste processing results into products that can be used and developed by the community.

The Bandung City Government is promoting similar education so that household waste management can reduce waste generation while providing economic benefits.
