PORTALJABAR, BANDUNG CITY - Bandung Mayor Muhammad Farhan initiated the concept of modern agriculture based on tourism through the development of rice field tourism areas and urban farming as part of a strategy to increase the added value of the agricultural sector.
In the Simultaneous Harvest event which was held online simultaneously in 14 provinces, Farhan expressed his vision to develop agricultural land as an educational and recreational tourism area within the city.
Farhan specifically highlighted the potential of the land around the Gelora Bandung Lautan Api (GBLA) Stadium which has an area of around 25 hectares.
He said the land could be developed not only as a food production area, but also as an agricultural-based tourist destination.
"Instead of just being an ordinary rice field, we can manage it again as a tourist spot on the edge of the rice field. Farmers continue to work, tourists can eat while enjoying the expanse of rice. This will be a unique attraction in the city of Bandung," he said, Monday (7/4/2025).
He also mentioned horticultural commodities such as melons as an example of product development with high economic value.
"In Japan, melons can be priced at 1,000 yen because of the packaging and the story. We can do that here too, because we have the quality, we just need to develop it," he added.
According to him, the concept of urban farming and rice field tourism will involve many parties, starting from the DKPP, the Department of Culture and Tourism, BBWS, to the surrounding community.
The goal is to create multi-party collaboration to maximize the potential of agricultural land, increase farmers' income, and create food security that is adaptive to global economic dynamics.
"This initiative will strengthen the identity of Bandung City as a creative city that is able to manage agricultural potential into a new economic force," he said. (Bandung City Government Public Relations/rka)
