PORTALJABAR, BANDUNG CITY - —The Bandung City Government is currently reviewing a scheme to strengthen food security through the concept of a food barn as a long-term measure amid dependence on supplies from other regions, while food distribution is currently still considered safe through the wholesale market network and Bulog, Thursday (18/6/2026).

Bandung Mayor Muhammad Farhan said that Bandung City does not yet have a food barn due to limited agricultural land, so it is highly dependent on supplies from various regions in Indonesia.

"Bandung City doesn't have a food barn yet. We rely heavily on two main markets, Gedebage and Caringin, plus Bulog and other large markets," said Farhan at Bandung City Hall.

He explained that the two main markets are the main gateways for distributing food commodities from at least 16 provinces to meet the needs of more than 2.5 million residents and millions of tourists visiting the city of Bandung.

Ciroyom Market is the distribution center for meat and fish, while Andir, Kosambi, Sederhana, and Pasar Baru Markets serve as secondary markets for vegetables and other commodities.

Farhan said Bulog plays a crucial role in maintaining supply stability, contributing around 30 percent of the rice, cooking oil, sugar, and flour needs in Bandung City.

He emphasized that as long as distribution runs smoothly, people's needs can still be met well even though demand pressure continues to increase.

The Bandung City Government is currently reviewing cooperation options with food-producing regions through a production land leasing scheme, as has been implemented in several other regions.

However, Farhan assessed that this policy requires in-depth study to ensure its targeted and efficient implementation.

"The question now is, what commodities does Bandung really need to secure? We shouldn't have to lease land at great expense, only to find that those needs can still be met through market mechanisms," he said.

In addition to strengthening supply, the government is also focusing on controlling inflation through coordination with various parties, including Bank Indonesia and related agencies.

Farhan explained that the increase in food demand in Bandung City was also influenced by the increase in the number of tourists, which had a direct impact on demand in the culinary and hotel sectors.

He added that the challenge of food security going forward lies not only in stock availability, but also in the ability to maintain a balance of supply amidst economic and tourism growth.

According to him, monitoring hoarding practices is also an important concern to maintain price stability, especially for premium rice commodities.

The Bandung City Government hopes that synergy between the government, Bulog, businesses, and the community can continue to be strengthened to ensure food security remains stable and affordable.
