Food Availability in West Java During Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr Surplus

PORTALJABAR, BANDUNG CITY - The availability of staple foods for the people of West Java during Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr 2025 is sufficient, even in surplus.

This can be seen in the West Java Province Food Balance, of the 12 strategic food commodities, almost all are in surplus.

Of the 12 strategic commodities, only three commodities experienced a deficit, namely beef or buffalo, garlic, and cooking oil. However, because the deficit was relatively low, it could be met from other sources until it finally became a surplus.

Beef, for example, is in deficit by 3 tons, garlic is in deficit by 9 tons, and cooking oil is in deficit by 44 tons.

However, this shortage can be met by bringing in commodities from imports and from outside West Java Province.

Food balance is a picture of the condition of fulfillment of needs and availability of food in West Java. Food balance data is obtained from districts/cities every 15th of the following month.

The 12 strategic food commodities are shallots, garlic, rice, large chilies, cayenne peppers, and broiler chicken. In addition, beef/buffalo, granulated sugar, corn, soybeans, cooking oil, and broiler chicken eggs.

From the West Java Food Balance data for February 2025, the 12 strategic food commodities had a surplus of between 1 and 87 tons, except for rice and corn which had a surplus of 500,000 tons.

For the development of strategic food prices are relatively stable, some even go down. However, there are several commodities that have experienced a relatively high increase when compared to the Government Purchase Price (HPP).

The commodities that experienced an increase were curly red chilies by more than 58 percent, and red cayenne peppers by more than 100 percent. In the balance sheet, the price development conditions were monitored until Friday (3/28/2025).
