PORTALJABAR, BANDUNG CITY - The Bandung City Government is preparing to replant 10 mahogany seedlings to restore the environment after tree felling.

This step received appreciation from the Deputy Chairman of the People's Consultative Assembly of the Republic of Indonesia (MPR RI) Eddy Soeparno during his visit to Bandung City Hall, Monday (11/8/2026).

Eddy believes that urban trees have an important ecological function and should not be sacrificed for the sake of commercializing space.

"From the start, I have been very concerned about the illegal tree felling, which is indicated to be for the construction of a padel with a videotron," said Eddy.

According to Eddy, swift and decisive action is needed to prevent unauthorized tree cutting from occurring again in Bandung City or other areas.

"Law enforcement, whether in the form of compensation in accordance with the provisions of the Regional Regulation or beyond that," he said.

Eddy also pushed for strengthening tree protection regulations through a revision of the environmental law currently being discussed by the Indonesian House of Representatives.

"I think there needs to be clarity in the revision of the environmental law regarding handling this tree problem," he said.

He explained that trees absorb and store carbon, maintain air quality, and make urban environments more beautiful and shady.

"This tree not only absorbs CO2 but also stores it. It not only provides a more beautiful and shady space, but it also serves as a showcase for the city," said Eddy.

Eddy appreciated the response of Bandung Mayor Muhammad Farhan and the Bandung City Government staff in handling tree felling in a number of locations.

"I appreciate the Mayor's swift action in seriously addressing this issue, including all levels of the Bandung City Government," he said.

Eddy hopes that other regional heads will take similar steps to protect trees from unauthorized felling.

"We must not let the forests and trees we need in the city be compromised by commercialization," said Eddy.

Meanwhile, Farhan prepared 10 mahogany seedlings about five meters tall to be replanted on Jalan RE Martadinata.

"In the next week, we will immediately plan to replant 10 5-meter-tall mahogany seedlings," said Farhan.

The planting will be preceded by sidewalk arrangement involving the Water Resources and Highways Agency (DSDABM), the Environmental Agency (DLH), and related regional agencies.

"The placement will be at the same location, but we'll adjust it. It will be rearranged later," said Farhan.

In addition, the Bandung City Government has prepared 1,000 tree seedlings from enforcement for reforestation in a number of green open spaces.

The seedlings will be distributed primarily in the northern part of East Bandung to increase greenery and expand ecological benefits for the community.

"It will be distributed across several green open spaces. We have a lot of green open spaces, especially in the northern part of East Bandung," he said.

The Bandung City Government noted that at least four locations were of concern in the tree cutting case, namely Cijerah, Jalan RE Martadinata, Jalan Sawung Galing, and Jalan Dago.

"The total is actually 35 trees," said Farhan.

Bandung City's Public Order Agency (Satpol PP) is still handling the case in the Dago area, while Farhan will continue to monitor developments in Cijerah.
