PORTALJABAR, GARUT REGENCY - The Garut Regency Government held the Garut University Rector's Cup Sheep Contest in Tarogong Kaler (11/1/2026) to increase livestock breeders' income through genetic quality assessment and wider market access.

Head of the Garut Regency Government's Fisheries and Animal Husbandry Service, Dyah Savitri, led the policy support so that this contest would become a means of selecting superior sheep that would increase the selling price of residents' livestock.

The event, attended by hundreds of breeders from various sub-districts, featured dozens of contest-standard Garut sheep, providing buyers with an objective quality reference.

Dyah Savitri said that Diskanak data shows that the price of contest sheep can increase by up to 30 percent compared to ordinary sheep, so that breeders can directly earn additional income.

Hilmi Aulawi opened the event on behalf of Garut University to ensure the campus provides technical assistance to farmers to understand feed, health, and breeding.

Hilmi Aulawi said, "This activity has high economic value through sheep farming culture. This sector is expected to be a concrete solution to accelerate the economic development of Garut Regency."

Bahrudin from the West Java Regional Leadership Council of the Indonesian Sheep and Goat Breeders Association explained that a network of buyers from outside the region came so that transactions did not only depend on the local market.

Muhammad Nizar, as the chief executive, noted that more than 200 sheep were registered, so the money turnover in this contest is estimated to reach hundreds of millions of rupiah.

A Tarogong Kaler breeder named Dadan said his sheep were sold for a higher price after passing the assessment, thus returning the feed capital and helping his family.

This program addresses the problem of low prices for livestock by providing field quality certification that is directly recognized by buyers.

The Garut Regency Government is targeting this sustainable contest model to reach thousands of livestock farmers in West Java to improve welfare through regional commodities.
