PORTALJABAR, BANDUNG CITY - A total of 400 Quranic teachers and Quranic education figures in Bandung City received training in Quranic literacy methods. They are being prepared to become leaders who can expand the movement to eradicate Quranic illiteracy into the community.

The training was part of the activities to eradicate illiteracy in the Qur'an and training teachers of the Koran through the Qur'an reading literacy method which was held at the Oakwood Merdeka Hotel Bandung, Jalan Jawa, Monday (5/10/2026).

Bandung Mayor Muhammad Farhan said that Quran teachers have a strategic role because they interact directly with children and families in informal educational settings.

According to him, not all parents who can read the Quran are capable of teaching it to their children. Therefore, the presence of Quran teachers is crucial to assist families in providing religious and character education.

"While most parents are skilled at reciting the Quran, not all of them are good at teaching. Sometimes we're more aggressive than we are instructive. So the presence of Quran teachers is very strategic," said Farhan.

He believes that Quranic teachers hold a position close to the daily lives of the community. This closeness can be a strength in building children's character from within their immediate environment.

"Character education and religious education must begin at home. Not all families are ideal. The presence of a Quran teacher in these private spaces will fill the void," he said.

Therefore, Farhan hopes that the training provided will not stop at increasing the participants' capacity. The Quranic teachers are expected to become trainers for other teachers through the Training of Trainers (TOT) concept.

"Expansion. Hopefully, it can become a TOT (training of trainers) for Koran teachers," he said.

Farhan also wants Quranic literacy to become a daily habit. He believes that reading the Quran doesn't have to be limited to specific times but can be done anytime and anywhere.

"You can study the Quran anytime. So, the goal of Quran literacy is to get used to reading the Quran anytime, anywhere," he said.

Meanwhile, Head of the Public Welfare Section of the Bandung City Regional Secretariat, Nasrullah Jamaluddin, said that the 400 participants were divided into four waves of 100 participants each.

Participants included Quranic teachers and prominent figures involved in improving Quranic education in Bandung. They were expected to bring the knowledge they gained to their respective communities.

"Participants are expected to not only participate in activities as recipients of material but also to become driving forces in improving the ability to read the Quran in their respective communities," explained Nasrullah.

He said the program aims to support the eradication of illiteracy in the Quran in a sustainable manner, improve the competence of Quran teachers, and provide an understanding of effective and easy-to-implement Quran reading literacy methods.

Nasrullah hopes that more children, young people, and the people of Bandung will be able to read the Quran correctly and understand its contents. (Bandung City Communications and Information Service/rka)
