PORTALJABAR, BANDUNG CITY - SMKN 3 Bandung held a Meeting, Incentive, Conference, Exhibition (MICE) while commemorating the 216th Anniversary of Bandung City (HJKB) on Thursday, September 24, 2026.

The activity on Jalan Solontongan became a project-based learning for students, especially in the Tourism Service Business (ULP) expertise competency.

The principal of SMKN 3 Bandung, Agung Indaryatno, said that MICE activities provide an opportunity for students to demonstrate their competence through real practice, not just written exams.

According to him, learning in vocational schools needs to provide space for students to apply knowledge through activities that resemble working conditions.

"This assessment truly measures your potential and competency in real-world settings by organizing MICE activities. MICE stands for Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions," he said.

He assessed that holding this activity also provided a momentum for students to build cooperation and solidarity through direct experience.

Moreover, this year's MICE activities are linked to the 216th HJKB commemoration so that students also recognize and understand the important momentum for the City of Bandung.

Agung hopes that the project-based learning model can continue to be developed in other expertise programs at SMKN 3 Bandung.

"We hope that other programs will also hold activities that are operational projects. So, it's not just about answering questions on paper, but also about how students can actually get through these kinds of activities," he said.

Meanwhile, Silvi Yenny, Tourism Services Business Competency Teacher at SMKN 3 Bandung, explained that MICE activities provide students with experience in organizing an event.

"MICE stands for Meeting, Incentive, Conference, and Exhibition. Essentially, it's organizing an event. They're taught the theory from A to Z, and then the final product is creating an event," he explained.

According to Silvi, this activity is the final product of class XII students and is also part of the school exam.

In its implementation, students are involved from the planning stage to the implementation of activities.

Learning is also carried out collaboratively with a number of other subjects, such as Indonesian, English, Mathematics, and Entrepreneurship.

Indonesian is applied in preparing proposals and presenter scripts, while English is related to the needs of the tourism industry.

Mathematics is used for statistical processing and probability in competitions, while Entrepreneurship is applied in managing business activities.

"This event is indeed annual, but it doesn't always take this form. Last year, we held an open house and cultural festival in collaboration with ISBI," he said.

In this year's activity, students were also involved in managing seven MSMEs present at the activity location.

This involvement is part of entrepreneurial learning and provides experience in managing activities directly.

Silvi said that practical experience is important for vocational school students because the industrial world not only looks at technical abilities (hard skills), but also non-technical abilities (soft skills).

"The industry often emphasizes not only students' hard skills but also their soft skills. This project also hones their soft skills, such as teamwork, collaboration with colleagues and customers, and how they handle events," he said.

Students also learn to manage activity financing through the business funds they manage, so they must adapt the concept to the available budget capacity.

According to Silvi, this process provides students with an initial overview before entering the tourism industry or event management industry.

He emphasized that organizing an event does not stop when the event is over.

Students also learn to understand three important stages, namely pre-event, during event, and post-event.

"My message to the kids is that when they leave here, they'll be able to understand what we've done, from pre-event, during, and post-event. So they'll have a basic understanding before entering the industry," he said.

Through this activity, SMKN 3 Bandung provides practical experience to students regarding the process of designing, preparing, implementing, and evaluating an event.

The MICE activity, which also commemorated the 216th HJKB, became a vocational learning activity that brought together theory and practice through collaboration, communication, creativity, entrepreneurship, and responsibility skills.
