PORTALJABAR, BANDUNG CITY - Bandung City Government has confirmed its commitment to make Bandung City a resilient city in facing disasters. The commitment was conveyed by Bandung Mayor Muhammad Farhan in the Disaster Preparedness Roll Call at City Hall (4/26/2025).
Muhammad Farhan said that the geological and demographic complexity of Bandung City makes this area vulnerable to various disasters, ranging from floods, landslides, tornadoes, to the potential for liquefaction.
He referred to a study by the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) and the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), there are 10 sub-districts in Bandung City that are potentially affected by liquefaction.
"Disasters are indeed unexpected, we must be able to live side by side with them, therefore, we must build community resilience to disasters as part of the development of human resources in the City of Bandung," said Muhammad Farhan.
According to him, collaboration between all elements of society is needed in dealing with disasters through the Pentahelix approach involving the government, society, business world, scientists, and the media.
Without cross-sector cooperation, disaster preparedness will not be optimal.
Muhammad Farhan said that currently the Bandung City Government is completing the formation of the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD).
"The nomenclature and regulations have been ratified, now we are setting up the organization and filling in the human resources," he explained.
In an interview after the roll call, Muhammad Farhan stated that the readiness of personnel and disaster equipment in Bandung City was quite good, but community readiness still needed to be improved.
He emphasized that education and community involvement must be strengthened so that the community is not only responsive in handling, but also active in disaster prevention efforts.
"Bandung is located on a fault line, we must get used to living in a disaster-prone area, meaning we must be mentally, knowledge-wise, and action-wise prepared," he said.
Muhammad Farhan reminded that the threat of disaster does not only occur in border areas such as Cidadap, Cibiru, and Gedebage.
He gave an example, when flash floods hit the Dago area, the impact was even felt by residents in Citepus who were far from the location of the incident.
With the spirit of collaboration and working together, Muhammad Farhan is optimistic that Bandung City can become a model for a disaster-resilient city in Indonesia.
"God willing, with the establishment of BPBD, disaster management will be faster, more focused, and more coordinated," he said.
In this activity, in addition to the Preparedness Roll Call, a Troop and Equipment Parade and Independent Evacuation Simulation were also held in the context of Disaster Preparedness Day (HKB) 2025.
In addition, certificates of gratitude were given to three disaster volunteers from Panyileukan District, Taruna Siaga Bencana, and representatives of the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) of Bandung City.
Disaster preparedness simulations were also carried out in a number of schools and monitored by the Mayor of Bandung and his staff via the virtual media Zoom.
Schools involved in the simulation include SDN 035 Soka, SMPN 21 Bandung, SMPN 53 Bandung, and a number of other schools in Bandung City.
